Frequently asked questions
- Why will nothing open my WebP file?
- Every current browser handles WebP, but plenty of desktop software, older phones and upload forms still do not. It is usually not that the file is broken — it is that whatever you are giving it to was written before WebP became common, or has a hard-coded list of allowed types that nobody has updated.
- Does converting WebP to JPG lose quality?
- A little. Your WebP has already been through lossy compression, and encoding to JPG is a second lossy pass, so a small amount of detail goes. At quality 85 the difference is not visible at normal viewing size. There is no way to avoid it when converting between two lossy formats.
- What happens to transparency?
- JPG has no alpha channel, so anything transparent has to be filled with a solid colour. The tool lets you choose which, defaulting to white. If you need to keep transparency, convert to PNG instead — WebP to PNG is lossless in that respect.
- Will the image dimensions change?
- No. The width and height in pixels stay exactly the same, and only the format and file size change.
- Will the JPG be bigger than the WebP?
- Usually yes, often by a third or more, because WebP is the more efficient format. That is the trade for compatibility. If file size matters more than compatibility, keep the WebP.
- Are my images uploaded to a server?
- No. The conversion happens entirely in your own browser using the Canvas API, so the files never leave your device and there is no upload wait.
