- What size is a YouTube banner?
- 2560 x 1440 pixels, a 16:9 image, under 6 MB. The smallest YouTube accepts is 2048 x 1152. That full image only appears on TVs; everywhere else YouTube shows a wide strip across the middle, and the part shown on every device is the center 1546 x 423.
- What is the YouTube banner safe area?
- The center 1546 x 423 pixels of the banner. It is the only part visible on phones, tablets, computers and TVs alike, so your channel name, logo and any text must sit inside it. Everything outside it is decoration that some screens will crop away. The dashed box in the preview marks it.
- Why does my YouTube banner look cropped on mobile?
- Because phones show only the middle of it. A banner designed edge to edge at 2560 x 1440 loses its sides and most of its height on a phone, so anything near the edges disappears. Keep the important part inside the 1546 x 423 center and it will show everywhere.
- Should my banner be a JPG or a PNG?
- JPG for a photo, which stays well under the 6 MB limit. PNG if the banner is mostly flat color and text, since JPG puts faint smudges around sharp lettering. YouTube re-compresses it either way.
- Can I make a thumbnail from the same image?
- Yes. Tick Video thumbnail as well and you get a 1280 x 720 version too, positioned separately. Thumbnails must be under 2 MB, which a JPG at that size always is.
- Is my image uploaded?
- No. The resizing happens in your browser, so the image never leaves your device.
