Frequently asked questions
- Does rotating an image reduce its quality?
- Not for quarter turns or flips. Turning by 90, 180 or 270 degrees, and mirroring, move every pixel to another exact pixel position, so nothing is blurred, averaged or invented. Any other angle is different: the new pixels do not line up with the old ones, so their values have to be worked out in between, which softens fine detail slightly. The tool tells you which case you are in as you work.
- Why does my image get bigger when I rotate it by a free angle?
- Because a tilted rectangle needs a larger box to fit inside. A square turned 45 degrees needs a canvas as wide as its diagonal, or the corners would be cut off. That extra space has to be filled with something, which is why a background colour appears once you leave the quarter turns.
- Why is my photo sideways in the first place?
- Phones and cameras usually record the picture in one orientation and add a note in the file saying which way up it should be shown. Most software reads that note, but some ignores it, which is why the same photo can look upright in one app and sideways in another. Rotating it here changes the actual pixels, so it looks correct everywhere.
- What is the difference between rotating and flipping?
- Rotating turns the picture around its centre. Flipping mirrors it, so left and right swap over, as in a mirror. A flipped photo is not the same as one rotated 180 degrees — text reads backwards in the flipped version.
- Can I rotate several images at once?
- Not yet in this tool, which handles one image at a time so you can see the angle you are choosing. If you need the same quarter turn applied to a folder of images, tell us and it is a straightforward addition.
- Is my image uploaded to a server?
- No. The rotation happens entirely in your own browser, so the file never leaves your device and nothing is stored.
