- What is EXIF data?
- Information your camera or phone writes inside the image file alongside the picture. It typically records the camera and lens, the exposure settings, the date and time, and — if location services were on — the exact coordinates where the photo was taken.
- Can EXIF data really show where a photo was taken?
- Yes, and this is the part most people do not realise. Phones embed GPS coordinates accurate to a few metres by default. A photo taken at home and sent to someone reveals your address to anyone who knows how to look.
- Why does my photo show no metadata at all?
- Most social platforms and messaging apps strip EXIF when you upload, so anything saved from Instagram, Facebook, or WhatsApp will usually come back empty. That is the platform protecting itself and you, not a fault with the file.
- Do screenshots have EXIF data?
- Very little. There is no camera or lens involved, so a screenshot generally carries only the dimensions and sometimes the device name. There is no location in one.
- Is my photo uploaded to a server?
- No, and that matters more here than on any other tool on this site. A photo you are checking for hidden location data is the last thing you should hand to a stranger's server. The file is read entirely by your own browser and never leaves your device.
