Frequently asked questions
- Does flipping an image reduce its quality?
- No. A flip is one of the few things you can do to a picture that costs nothing at all: every pixel moves to another exact pixel position, so no value is ever averaged, guessed or invented. The only quality question left is the file format you save as. PNG stores the flipped picture exactly. JPG and WebP are both re-encoded on the way out and lose a little in the process, as saving in either of those always does.
- What is the difference between flipping and rotating an image?
- Rotating turns the picture around its center, the way you would turn a photograph on a table. Flipping mirrors it, the way a mirror does, so left and right swap over. They are genuinely different: a photo rotated 180 degrees is upside down, but nothing in it is mirrored — turn the picture back the other way and the writing reads normally again. A flipped photo is the right way up and the writing still reads backwards, and no amount of turning fixes it. Flipping horizontally and vertically together is the one case where the two meet — that combination is the same as a 180 degree rotation.
- Why does my selfie look reversed?
- Because the preview on your phone is mirrored so it behaves like a mirror while you frame the shot, and many phones then save the picture unmirrored — the way other people see you. That is why your own face can look subtly wrong in your own photo. Flipping it horizontally here gives you back the version you were actually posing against.
- Can I flip a photo without the text in it reading backwards?
- No, and no tool can. A flip mirrors everything in the frame at once, so if you turn a subject to face the other way, any writing, logo or number that happened to be in the shot is mirrored with them. There is no way to hold part of the picture still. If it is only the text that matters, flip the image and then cover or replace that part, or leave the image alone and move it in your layout instead.
- My whole photo reads backwards. Will flipping fix it?
- Yes, and this is the case where flipping is exactly the right answer. A shot taken in a mirror, a selfie a front camera saved mirrored, or a picture some other app has already flipped is wrong uniformly, so flipping it horizontally puts everything back at once, text included. That is the difference from the question above: flipping fixes a mirrored image, but it cannot un-mirror one part of an image that was never mirrored.
- Is my image uploaded to a server?
- No. The flip happens entirely in your own browser, so the file never leaves your device and nothing is stored.
