What is image resolution?
Resolution is the number of pixels in an image and nothing else. Most of the confusion around it comes from three different numbers being called the same thing, and from the fact that high resolution means nothing until you say what it is for.

The short answer
Resolution is the pixel count. Width by height. A photo that is 4000 by 3000 pixels has a resolution of 4000 by 3000, and that is the whole definition.
It is not the DPI. It is not the file size in megabytes. Both of those are real numbers about the same file, and neither of them is the resolution, which is why so many conversations about this go in circles.
There is no such thing as high resolution on its own
2000 by 1500 is generous for a web page, comfortable for a 6 by 4 print, marginal for an 8 by 10 and hopeless for a poster. Same file every time. High resolution is a relationship between the pixels you have and the size you are using them at, so anybody who answers it with a single number is guessing at the second half.

The resolution. How much information the image actually contains, and the only one of the three that says anything about detail. Everything else in this guide is about this number.
DPI
A note in the file saying how densely to print those pixels. It has no effect on a screen at all, and it does not change the image. The same 1800 by 1200 photo prints 6 by 4 inches at 300 DPI and 12 by 8 inches at 150, because you are spreading identical pixels over more or less paper.
If a printer asked you for 300 DPI, what they need is enough pixels for the size they are printing. The number is shorthand for that requirement, not the requirement. Our DPI converter sets the tag and, more usefully, tells you the resolution you will really get at the size you have in mind.
File size
How many megabytes the file takes up, which depends mostly on compression and hardly at all on quality. A heavily compressed 4000 pixel photo can be smaller on disk than a lightly compressed 1500 pixel one. Judging resolution by file size gets the answer wrong in both directions, and why a JPEG is so big covers what actually drives it.
PPI is the same idea as DPI, aimed at screens
Pixels per inch describes how densely a display packs its pixels, and dots per inch describes how densely a printer lays ink. In everyday use people say DPI for both and are understood. Neither is the resolution of your image.
How to check the resolution of an image
Any of these gives you the same answer in a few seconds.
- Windows: right click the file, Properties, then the Details tab. Look for Dimensions.
- Mac: select the file and press Command and I. Or open it in Preview and choose Tools, then Show Inspector.
- Phone: the photo's info or details panel, usually behind an i button or by swiping up on the picture.
- In your browser: drop it into the DPI converter or the aspect ratio calculator. Both read the dimensions out of the file and neither uploads it.
What you are looking for is two numbers, like 4032 by 3024. If a program shows you inches or centimeters instead, it is showing you a print size calculated from the DPI tag, which is a different question wearing the same clothes.
Is mine high enough?
For a screen, almost certainly. A full width image on a web page rarely needs more than about 2000 pixels across, and doubling that just makes the page slower.
For print, multiply the size in inches by 300. That is the whole calculation, and it is worth being able to do in your head:
- 4 by 6 inches: 1200 by 1800 pixels
- 5 by 7 inches: 1500 by 2100
- 8 by 10 inches: 2400 by 3000
- A4: about 2480 by 3510
- 18 by 24 inch poster: 5400 by 7200
Falling short of those numbers is not automatically a problem. 300 is the standard for something held at reading distance. A poster looked at from across a room is fine at 150, and a billboard is printed at resolutions that would look absurd on a postcard, because nobody stands a foot away from it.
The one case that catches people out
Cropping reduces resolution. Take a 4000 pixel photo, crop to the interesting third of it, and you have a 1300 pixel image whatever the original was. This is the usual explanation for a photo that was plenty big enough until somebody straightened and tightened it.
Megapixels, and why the number matters less than it sounds
A megapixel is a million pixels. Multiply the two dimensions and divide by a million: 4000 by 3000 is twelve megapixels. It is the same information as the resolution, expressed as one number instead of two, which is convenient for selling cameras and slightly less useful for anything else, because it hides the shape.
Twelve megapixels is around 4200 by 2800 and prints at roughly 14 by 9 inches at 300 DPI. That covers essentially every print anybody actually orders. The reasons to want more are real but narrow: cropping hard, printing very large, or wanting room to do both.
For anything that will only ever be seen on a screen, extra megapixels do nothing except make files slower to send. That is what resizing down and compressing are for.
Why you cannot add resolution
Enlarging an image does not increase its resolution in any meaningful sense. It increases the pixel count while adding no information: the software looks at the pixels it has and invents plausible ones in between. The result is bigger and softer, and every extra pixel is a guess.
This is why the honest answer to “can you make this higher resolution” is usually no. It is also why enhancing a blurry photo works so much better on television than in life.
What does help, in order of how much:
- Find a larger original. Phones and cameras keep the full size version; the small one is usually something that was emailed, texted or downloaded from a website. The big one often still exists.
- Print it smaller. The same pixels at a smaller size are a sharper print. This is free and it always works.
- Enlarge and accept the softness. Sometimes it is enough, particularly if the print will be viewed from a distance. Our resizer does it, and will not pretend the result gained detail.

A file marked 300 DPI is not higher resolution than the same file marked 72.

- Fewer than the marketing suggests. Twelve megapixels is roughly 4200 by 2800, which prints at 14 by 9 inches at 300 DPI. That covers almost every print a person actually orders. More megapixels help when you crop heavily or print very large, and do nothing at all for images that will only ever be seen on a screen.
- Why is my image blurry even though it is high resolution?
- Resolution counts pixels, it does not judge them. A photo can have plenty of pixels and still be soft because the focus missed, the camera moved, the light was poor, or it was enlarged from something smaller at some point. A large blurry image is a large blurry image, and no resolution setting improves it.
